On the list of the things Russia is famous for there are Russian dolls, picturesque landscapes, cuisine, hospitality, theatres, architecture and of course painting. I mean real Russian painting – colorful, bright, enormous, unforgettable, eternal, something that makes your heart beating faster as you get a chance to see Russian sole on pictures. The pearl of Russian art is certainly the collection of the Tretyakov gallery.

If you have come to Moscow and missed the Tretyakov gallery you have missed a lot. The building in a fairy-tale style is the national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the greatest museums in the world. The collection of the Tretyakov gallery was started in the 1850s by Pavel Tretyakov, a rich Moscow merchant and textile mill owner in the 1850s. Buying paintings he relied only on his own taste and was the first who highly appreciated old Russian icons.

Its collection numbered 1286 pictures, 471 drawings and 10 sculptures by the Russian masters and 84 pictures by the foreign painters. Later in 1892 Tretyakov devised his gallery to the Moscow city. In 1900-1903 architect Bashkirov worked over the facade of the new buildingof the Tretyakov gallery which was supposed to be in a fairy-tail style as artist Vasnetsov offered in his drawings.

On June 3, 1918 the Tretyakov gallery was announced to become public domain and got the name State Tretyakov gallery. After a few renovations including the dismounting of the display during the Second World War the Tretyakov gallery opened its doors to the visitors. Long ticket queues were encircling the building with hope to see the beauty of the pictures.

During the 20th century the Tretyakov gallery expanded to several neighboring buildings, including the church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi and Picture Gallery situated on Krimsky Val in Moscow. The Tretyakov gallery also includes Museum-studio of sculptor Golubkina, house-museum of Vasnetsov, museum-flat of Vasnetsov, house-museum of Korin, exhibition hall in Tolmachi.

The collection of the Tretyakov gallery grew considerably after Revolution: in 1893 it consisted of 1805 works of art and now it has already increased 35 000.

During one of my visits to the Tretyakov gallery I met a woman who told me that she went there once a month and devoted the whole day to one hall only. Her dream was to examine all the works in detail and each day she could feel the atmosphere of the master whose hall she attended.

No doubt the collection of the Tretyakov gallery is nowadays so enormous that it is impossible to pay attention to every piece exhibited. Every person could find the style or direction that is close to his or her feelings and interests. Tastes could differ but no one will be disappointed by the Tretyakov gallery. Icons by Andrey Rublev, sentiments by Vasily Tropinin, picturesque landscapes by Alexander Ivanov and Ivan Shishkin, alive fairy-tail by Victor Vasnetzov and so many other different and appealing works that will bring you to the times of aristocrats, balls, palace revolutions, church conflicts and primeval nature will never live you indifferent.

Judging by personal experience I would like to say that all the troubles of the day vanish when you cross the threshold of the Tretyakov gallery. Its cosy halls, calm rhythm and comfortable benches let you enjoy the pieces of beauty again and again. And a thing of beauty is a joy for ever! So is the Tretyakov gallery.
