1. In the settlement Abramtsevo there is an estate of the Aksakov (later Mamontov) family well preserved. Unbridled temper of Savva Mamontov attracted such artists as Repin, Polenov, Korovin and contemplative disposition of his wife – such painters as Nesterov, Serov, Vasnetsov. Under the project developed by Vasnetsov fairy-tale house “Hut on chicken legs” was built, he draw the picture Alenushka and the painter Serov portrayed Vera, the daughter of the estate’s owner, which now can be seen in Tretyakov Gallery – “Girl with peaches”.

By the way when the hostess was absent one of the greatest Russian writers Gogol himself prepared for the Aksakov family macaroni with cheese.

Arkhangelskoe2. One of the best estates of the Moscow suburbs is the estate of the dukes Jusupov – Arkhangelskoe. It was described by a famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in his work “To the baron”. The museum is closed for restoring works, but landscapes are really picturesque. Cascade Italian gardens with wonderful sculptures, monument to Alexander Pushkin, church of Michael Archangel won’t leave you indifferent.

3. Chekhov’s brother believed that Babkino played a big role in the development of Anton Chekhov’s talent. “Without speaking about marvelous nature where there are a big park, a river, forests and valleys at our disposal and fantastic people… Around seven o’clock in the morning the brother Anton was already sitting at the table at a nice view opening out of the window and was writing…” A garden in the moonlight with ribbons of mist described in his work “Vera” is a garden in Babkino. There are still white gulls flying over Istra river.

Church near Sergiev Posad4. It’s very beautiful in Big Vjazemi. But the reason is not the fact that there stayed Kutusov after the Borodino battle and Napoleon before the trial to conquer Moscow. Pushkin also came here. It’s a zar patrimony of the Golizin family. There are still a temple, bell-tower, church fence, pond, a bridge preserved from those times, so it’s worth seeing. It is a perfect place for romantic walking and family excursions.

5. In 120 km to the west of Moscow there is a Borodino field. There was the largest and the bloodiest battle on 26 August, 1812. Once a year you can hear a peal of weapons there, the museum of Military History is steeped with smoke. On Sunday closer to the 9 September there is a stage battle arranged.

6. Where Vori falls into Kljazma there is an estate of Glinka. It belonged to the associate of Peter the Great, Jakov Brusov. He carried scientific experiments there and gained the character of practitioner of black magic. He planted the trees in the garden at the sign of Mumbo Jambo and opened the secret of water of life. It is said that showing its effect to Peter the Great once in July he turned a pond in the park into the skating-rink and suggested his guests that they should skate. This estate is the oldest in the suburbs of Moscow. A museum has been opened here recently.

7. In Darovoe one of the greatest Russian writers Dostoevsky spent the best days of his childhood. Here was Harin wasteland, mentioned in his work “ Village Stepanchikovo”, village Cheremoshnja was mentioned several times in his novel “The brothers Karamazov”, “in dull and wild Brikov wood” – in “Fedin hurst”, a place where a duel of Stavrogin and Gaganov, described in the novel “The Possessed” took place is Darovoe.

8. Nikolo-Ugresh monastery is a monastery located in Dzerzhinsky (former Ugreshi) town center. The monastery was founded ca. 1380 by the order of the Knyaz Dmitri Donskoi and was named after Saint Nicholas, who, as the legend says, Knyaz saw in the dream, in time of preparing for the long campaign against Mamai horde. In an effort to fight children homelessness, monastery was partially destroyed and reorganised into a children labour colony in 1920; it was later transformed into a labour commune by Felix Dzerzhinsky.

Reopened as a Russian Orthodox church institution in 1991 and considered to be the center of Saint Nicholas worship in Moscow oblast. At present it is one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in Russia with restored churches and chapels, with a territory with lots of greenery and swan ponds. There is a theological seminary and newly opened Sacristy-Museum.

9. In the settlement Dubrovizi there is a fantastic Znamen Church, decorated with stone carving with a crown instead of the dome. It was built in honour of Peter the Great who visited the place lots of times. A palace of dukes Golizin, unforgettable view from the church hill, hills and fields beyond the river…

10. In a town Zhukovsky there are planes designed and tested. You can try a hang-glider, sail-plane or other aircrafts. You can even ride a Fulcrum… for Big Money.

11. Zvenigorod is one of the oldest towns of Moscow area. The town's name is derived from two roots, meaning "to ring bells" and "town". It may be translated as "the town where they ring bells". Indeed, when they rang bells in Zvenigorod, the sound was heard in Moscow, situated some 50 km to the east.

Zvenigorod rose to prominence in the late 14th century, after it was bequeathed by Dmitry Donskoy to his second son Yuri, who founded his residence on the steep bank of the Moskva River. The local Kremlin, called Gorodok, contains the only fully preserved example of 14th-century Muscovite architecture, the Assumption Cathedral (1399). The cathedral's interior features frescoes by the great Andrey Rublev.

The hills of the town are called Russian Switzerland. Here Karamzun, Gerzen had holidays and Chekhov worked as a doctor for a town hospital. The writer planted larch-trees near the hospital.

12. Close to settlement Iksha there is a goldfield. You can pan out some gold dust here.

13. In the town Voskresensk (was also the name of the town of Istra before 1930) Patriarch Nikon intended building Russian Jerusalem. For the cathedral of the monastery a plan of the Hierosolymitan temple of Holy Sepulchre was used, the hills were called Sion, Eleon and Favor, Istra was renamed into Iordan. Now you can walk through the garden of Gethsemane, sea the temple with a fantastic dome, get upon the walls of the New Jerusalem Monastery, observe a 3-floor priory of the patriarch. Here you will see a real cottage with a Russian stove and utensils, a windmill.

14. Klin is famous for it musical monuments. Here is a house-museum of Pyotr Tchaykovsky where he wrote such ballets as Sleeping Beauty and the Nutcracker, operas Enchantress, the Queen of Spades and Iolanta, the Fifth and the Sixth symphonies.

15. In settlement Melikhovo – there is Chekhov’s estate where the master wrote “Gull”. Nemirovich-Danchenko believed that a schene of Treplev, one of the main characters of the book, was on the road going to the lake. Some episodes of life in Melikhovo were described by Chekhov in his stories “Black Monk” and “Professional Affairs”.

16. In his dacha house in Peredelkino Boris Pasternak learnt that he got the Nobel Prize in Literature of 1958. Lots of foreign journalist came. You will see pictures of smiling Boris Pasternak while he was reading a cable telling about the Prize, of confused Pasternak when he standing with a glass of wine was listening to the congratulations of Korney Chukovsky. And on a picture made in 20 minutes he is sitting at the table with the same people but he looks upset and his eyes are very sad. During these 20 minutes Fedin came and without congratulating Pasternak declared that in order to avoid serious problems Pasternak should voluntarily refuse from the Nobel Prize and the novel “Doctor Zhivago”.

17. In village Rozhdestveno-Suvorovo there is a family estate of one of the greatest Russian commanders, Suvorov, in the church situated on this territory his farther is buried.

18. In Sergiev Posad you you will be able to see and visit a spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1345 one of the most venerated Russian saints Sergius of Radonezhs founded The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Andrey Rublev, a famous Russian icon-painter worked. Under the rule of Ivan the Terrible the cloister was surrounded by 1.5km-long stone walls, featuring 11 towers, which helped the monastery to withstand a celebrated –month Polish-Lithuanian siege in 1608-1610. Lots of pilgrims come here, especially on orthodox holidays. Neighbouring forests are full of mushrooms and raspberry. You can swim and fish in Torbeevskoe lake. In the river Torgosh if you are lucky you will pan out some gold dust.

19. In the estate of dukes Dolgorukov, Podmoklovo, there is a unique church “Nativity of the Blessed Virgin” in a style of Italian baroque, decorated with white-stone statues of apostles.

20. In the settlement Ubori there is The Spass Church at the bank of Moskva river. Nearby there is a bridge form which Elzin was thrown off once. The bridge is high; you can swim and enjoy fishing in the river.
